BALLAST WATER TREATMENT

Shipping moves over 80% of the world’s commodities and transfers approximately 3 to 5 billion tonnes of ballast water internationally each year. A similar volume may also be transferred domestically within countries and regions each year. Ballast water is absolutely essential to the safe and efficient operation of modern shipping, providing balance and stability to un-laden ships. However, it may also pose a serious ecological, economic and health threat.

The UN considers the introduction of non-indigenous oceanic species to be one of the top four serious threats to the global environment. At any given time, 35 000 ships are en route on the water of the Earth and more than 3000 species are being transported in their ballast tanks. The UN’s International Maritime Organization estimates that ten billion tons of ballast water is transported around the world every year.

The past decade has seen a marked increase in the spread of species to areas where they do not naturally belong. This creates an imbalance in ecosystems and is a serious environmental threat. Many times the invader has no natural predator and the original species become extinct and the entire marine ecosystem is disrupted. This has dramatic consequences for biodiversity and for industries such as fishing and aquaculture.

  • UV SYSTEM

The UV System was developed based on 20 years of experience in water injection on offshore platforms, water treatment for fish farming and drinking water plants in Norway.

    • High power UV for the efficient killing or inactivation of organisms, bacteria and pathogens in ballast water
    • One UV lamp per chamber (167 m3/h flow rate per chamber)
    • Standardized UV chamber, installed in parallel on a single manifold for higher flows
    • Developed and manufactured for installation aboard ships
    • Optimized for minimum maintenance and ease of operation. It is self-cleaning, with no moving parts or need for chemical cleaning
    • UV and temperature sensor in each chamber
    • Advanced flow control in IMO / USCG mode
    • Holding time IMO mode: No holding time
    • Holding time USCG mode: 2 hours
  • FILTERS

The filter is removing the particles from the seawater during intake. It is therefore only in use during ballasting. The filter screen is 40μm. The filter has a self-cleaning function by reversing the flow direction and flushing the untreated water back into the sea.

    Optimarin offers two different filters:

    • Boll & Kirch basket type, 25 µm
    • Filtrex basket type filter, 20 µm
    • Both filter types have automatic back flushing and are self-cleaning.

    Key features include:

    • Removes large particles and organisms
    • Low pressure loss of only 0.1 – 0.5 BAR
    • Bypassed during de-ballasting
  • FLOW PRESSURE VALVE

Optimarin has the pleasure of introducing a new type of control valve: Electric Flow Pressure Valve. The electric FPV will provide OBS with the latest in control valve innovation, technology and valve acoustics.

    • Small (DN350: 193mm)
    • Light (DN350: 130kg)
    • Building material
      • Butterfly valve with rubber seat, bronze-alu disc
      • Flow control element in stainless steel

    • Electrically actuated
      • Control speed fixed in actuator
      • Fluctuating pressure has no impact on control

    • Prepared for OptiFlow

    The solution & assembly

By attaching a multi tooth element to the butterfly valve body, all negative effects are eliminated and we are left with an exceptional control valve. The teeth profiles provide an equal percentage flow characteristic, which results in a high precision regulator which makes regulation in the entire control range of the valve a simple matter.

    Key features

    • Conventional butterfly valves have high dynamic torque due to the airplane wing effect of the flat vane surfaces. This can be a cause for instability and the need for larger, more expensive actuators.
    • Offers an equal percentage flow characteristic
    • Low cavitation and noise
  • CONTROL PANEL

This cabinet contains the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) that controls and logs all executed operations in the Optimarin Ballast Water Treatment System.

The Optimarin Control Panel has undergone a major upgrade with new high-end performance CPU and touch screen. With the latest control system technology implemented, we now bring our BWTS into the new technological era. With increased processing power and response time, we can now control, monitor and share information in a more optimized manner. All this is available at the new touch panel or remotely with cloud-based data acquisition for central easy overview (OptiLink)

    • Custom made with improved user-friendly interface – developed by Optimarin
    • New 9″ high-end performance widescreen TFT display with touch operation.
    • New high-end performance Siemens CPU 1516 series
    • Interface with the ship’s main control systems (with data bus or digital I/O)
    • Supports the new OptiLink solution with cloud-based data acquisition for central easy overview ( OptiLink sold separately)
    • Supports connection to vessels GPS for position and time synchronization
    • Supports PROFINET (Industrial Ethernet) and PROFIBUS (Process Field Bus)
    • Logging in accordance with IMO and USCG requirements
    • Operation log, alarm list and operation data can easily be extracted from the touch panel with just a click to an inserted USB-stick or to cloud (OptiLink).
    • Easy import and export functionality of operation parameter configuration without service onboard
    • Supports all Optimarin additional features (PMS integration, Interlock, fresh water filling +++)
  • SKID SOLUTIONS

We deliver the system as complete skid solution. Our plug-and-play option!

For a simple and quick installation, the Optimarin skid solution is an extremely efficient choice both for newbuilds and retrofit projects. The smallest skid manufactured can treat 50m³/h ballast water and the largest skid manufactured can treat 3.000m³/h ballast water. We supply both a non-EX and EX versions (ATEX/ IECEX) of our skid solutions.

Simply lift aboard, connect piping for inlet, outlet, drain and connect electrical cables and airlines if pneumatic actuators are used and you are ready to start ballast operations. For the added EX option, the cabinets are installed in a safe zone.

    Key features

    • Compact design with small footprint
    • Bypass valve installed on the skid itself.
    • Airlines for controlling pneumatic actuators
    • Complete with electrical cabling trays and cabling
    • Removable lifting lugs for safe and trouble-free lifting aboard
    • Delivered with complete FAT documentation
    • Manufactured in the EU
    • Project specific custom coloring available upon request
    • Ranges from 50 – 1500 m³/h
    • Easy installation
  • EX SOLUTIONS

The Optimarin Ballast Water Treatment Systems can be delivered for installation in areas with potentially explosive atmosphere, Ex zone 1 .

The Optimarin BWTS Ex is built with individually certified quality components resulting in Ex marking :II 2G Ex d e  ia ib mb px IIB/IIC T4, depending options selected. Control- and power panels are installed in safe area; while UV chambers, valves, filter, pump and instrumentation are approved for installation in hazardous area.

The UV-chamber Ex protection is a certified Exp solution. The internal parts of the UV-chambers, excluding the flow path of ballast water, is purged and pressurized with nitrogen. The nitrogen overpressure prevents hazardous atmosphere contact with the UV-lamp and allow effective UV treatment of the ballast water.

  • SPARE PARTS

The Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS) has predefined maintenance intervals. In collaboration with our vendors we have developed a recommended Service Parts Program that will ensure an operational system with minimal service requirements and downtime.

The maintenance may be performed by the crew onboard the vessel, or in co-operation with Optimarin service technicians around the globe. Detailed instructions are found in the Operations, Maintenance and Safety Manual which is delivered together with the OBS.

Optimarin has created Service Part packages for every 2.5 year the preventive maintenance of the system. It is important that our customers are performing this maintenance in order to keep the system in compliance with the rules and regulations and in order to remain peace of mind when it comes to the performance of the OBS.
